Following the resolution of the Nigerian Senate to take President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day further by asking that the official result of the June 12, 1993 presidential election be announced, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has added a hilarious demand that threw the senate into a theatre of comic relieve.

It will be recalled that President buhari on Wednesday decided to honour late Chief Moshood Abiola by declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s new democracy day. He also declared that the late Abiola would be given Nigeria’s highest national honour, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), while his then running mate, Babagana Kingibe would be given the second highest, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

The president’s announcement brought the Upper Chamber into a lengthy discussion on Thursday; the senate while supporting Buhari’s decision, however insisted that May 29th remains the hand-over date to avoid unconstitutional extension of power. They said that an alteration of the handover date will require a constitutional amendment.

However, all hell was let loosed when the senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyi Abaribe, a sworn critic of Buhari’s style of administration stood up to demand that December 31st be declared as Democracy Destruction Day by President Buhari to mark the day Buhari led a coup that truncated the democratically elected government of Shehu Shagari in 1985.

“Finally, I want to also propose another day since we are now moving in the right direction, saying that democracy is needed. I want to propose that we also designate 31st December as Democracy Destruction Day because that was the day that this same president did a coup that removed a democratically elected government.”

Abaribe’s choice of words brought laud laughter among Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from the South, but irked the All Progressive Congress (APC) Senators from the Northern Nigeria who shouted him down for using offensive choice of words and raised a point of order that Abaribe has derailed from the issue being discussed.

The point of order was sustained as Abaribe took his seat and never stopped laughing.
