Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia State governor has warned school owners and proprietors that he will soon begin to clampdown on all substandard schools in the state that failed to meet the minimum standard required of a model school.
Ikpeazu disclosed this after inspecting works at Abayi Umuocham Primary School in Osisioma LGA and Osusu-Amaukwa Community Primary School in Obingwa LGA, which were among the four model schools built by the state government.
The governor stressed that the state now has a specified standard a school must meet before it can get permission to operate.
He added that every school that wished to continue its existence as a school in the state must take a clue from the four model schools established by his administration or cease to exist completely.
In his words, “This is a time we are going to clampdown on substandard school in Abia. There can’t be any school in a flat. I mean you must show us premises and conveniences for teachers, pupils and students.
“The minimum standard of a school in Abia will be these model schools that are in place. If a school is not fit for my own child, then it is not fit and proper for any Abia child. So, we are going to ensure that all our schools meet minimum standard,” he said.
Speaking further, Ikpeazu said that security will be improved in the newly constructed model schools to make sure that the aims of establishing them are not defeated.
“There are still more to be done in terms of security. If you’re setting up an ultra-modern laboratory, E-library and a quarter to take care of teachers, you need adequate security to keep them safe. Some of the premises need more security to prevent hoodlums from making use of it.
“Regrettably, adult play soccer on the fields and undermine the roofs. This has to stop as it continues the dilapidation of school infrastructure.
“Those who indulge in illicit drugs within the premises take away the school fans and laboratory equipment to sell them and this must stop.
“We must put a wall around these model schools that we are building, and provide adequate security for them. Without it, we’ll be running round the circle.
“We must re-strategize. If it will be better to deploy Abia vigilante service permanently to make sure they provide adequate security 24/7 we will do it.”
