A group of unidentified gunmen on Monday morning shot and killed two police officers in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The gunmen had attacked the two officers at a checkpoint and allegedly carted away their rifles.
The manner in which the two mobile police officers, were gunned down at Timber/ Ojoto street, Diobu, Port Harcourt sent anxiety in the atmosphere as residents and passersby ran for their dear lives for at the sound of gunshots.
Meanwhile, an eye witness said a liquor distribution company owned by one “Paddy Man” located at Nwachukwu/Ojoto street Mile 2 Diobu was the prime target for the attack with millions of naira taken by the gunmen.
It was gathered that the gunmen left immediately after the operation that lasted for just three minutes.
James, an eyewitness who is a trader close to the area, told said the two policemen were at a checkpoint when they were attacked.
He pointed out that the bandits were driving to an unknown destination when they met the checkpoint before they opened fire on the policemen.
“The gunmen were in a vehicle around Ojoto axis of Port Harcourt. When they got to a checkpoint along the road, they brought out their gun and shot the two policemen on duty,” he said.
It was however gathered that business owners around the area closed their shops after the incident.
Information reaching Naijawatchdog had bit that Rivers State Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident, adding that the hoodlums attacked and killed two policemen.
Omoni was reportedly said to have said
that two rifles belonging to the cops were taken away by the hoodlum.
“I don’t have much detail about what happened, but I can confirm to you that today, two policemen were attacked and killed at Ojoto in Port Harcourt. The bandits also took away their rifles.”
The PPRO however, promised to speak on the matter after getting full details of the circumstances that led to the death of the two policemen.
